The Main Campus of the University of Gujrat is given the name after a famous local Sufi saint who is known as Hafiz Muhammad Hayat. The shrine of the saint is located within the bounds of the university and is representative of the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the area. The main campus of UOG was constructed on the land donated by Hafiz Muhammad Hayat. The creation of the University of Gujrat was the result of the efforts of the ex-chief minister of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who remained as the chief minister of Punjab between the years 2002 to 2007. Professor Dr. Muhammad Nizamuddin was the Vice-Chancellor of University of Gujrat previously. He was also given the award of the “Nineteenth Star Award 2008” and later he received the distinction of being the “Man of the Year 2008” for his endeavors in the field of learning and knowledge.

Currently the district comprises of three sub divisions namely, Gujrat, Kharian and Sarai Alamgir. The district headquarter is located in the Gujrat city. District Gujrat is the located between the Jhelum River and the river Chenab. The region is known for the agricultural activities and supplies a sufficient production of the crops like rice, wheat, sugar cane, and tobacco. Besides this it supplies vegetables, fruits to the entire Pakistan. The city is known for its great manpower. Famous, businessmen, writers, journalists, singers, actors and actresses come from this town.
