After its establishment in 1970, Malakand District is enjoying an important strategic place for being a gateway to Bajaur, Lower Dir, Swat and Bunair. It has mountains all around it. There were times when these mountains were covered with lush green trees. Today these mountains appear barren due to excessive deforestation and lack of proper care. The district is also known for the great Malakand Pass that joins Mardan to Swat and Dir. It is situated near Dargai, which was a war site between the local Pushtuns and the Imperial British forces in 19th century.
BISE Peshawar was set up in 1961. In the early days the board was held responsible of looking after the entire province of KPK and also the tribal area. As the number of educational institutions and the students started multiplying the responsibility of the Peshawar board was split and sub offices were created in many cities including Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Bannu Chitral and D.I.Khan. Over the period of time more and more educational institutions were introduced with the increasing number of students. The management became difficult and therefore the parents started demanding separate BISE. Thus, the creation of new boards became inevitable. The government had to take the revolutionary step and so it decided to lay down the foundations of many other boards including Abbottabad, Bannu, Swat, Kohat, Mardan, Malakand and D.I.Khan. Hence, 8 new boards were born and Malakand board which holds the responsibility of four zones being;
1. Dir Lower
2. Dir Upper
3. Distt: Malakand
4. Bajaur Agency
